Now im not talking opium dens but having travelled SE Asia fairly extensively I really enjoyed spending time with local knock-about types who took me to the seedier side of places like Bangkok, Jakarta and Manilla (among others).

Im hoping to have similar experiences in Mumbai and of course reading Shantaram has fuelled this further. I get that India would have changed immensely since the period the book was set in and that it was largely fictional so Im not looking to replicate anything in it…

I am traveling to India next week and am having trouble booking train reservations. http://www.irctc.co.in/ website says that it cannot load on my computer, so I attempted to book through the MakeMyTrip app. However, once I get to the step where you enter traveler information, it says invalid phone number. Has anyone else encountered this issue and/or have a solution or idea!?

I have a question about the weather in Tamil Nadu in December. I am thinking of heading there for 2 weeks between around 2 December and 16 December. I have read that is towards the end of monsoon season. I know the weather is always variable, but in practice would anyone be able to tell me what that will likely mean? I have a Garmin GPS device I just bought and would like to bring it because I’ll be trekking. I see that satellite phones are banned, but I can’t find information as to whether GPS devices are ok or not. They obviously also work on satellite, even though they aren’t voice capable.

I am planning to visit Imphal again next February/March (2019). Last time I flew from London via Doha to Kolkata, spent a couple of days there and then flew on to Imphal. I'd like to do the same sort of thing next year but would like recommendations on an Indian city to fly into and visit.
