What is a reputable website to get an e-tourist visa for India being a US citizen. The Chicago consulate said www.in.ckgs.us with a cost of $120 USD. Does this seem correct?
Doing a search leads to many options and want to be sure I am getting the visa from a reputable website at a reasonable cost. How much is the tourist Visa? Years ago I did this but went to the consulate to do everything which is no longer an option (per the consulate). I leave on April 22 and need to do this soon!

Thanks!

If you want the eVisa, then the correct place to head is:

How much is the tourist Visa?

The fee for US citizens is $75.

I initially tried this website but was unable to upload the passport picture so decided to call the consulate. Why would the consulate in Chicago give me a different website?

Why would the consulate in Chicago give me a different website?

Because Cox and Kings are the appointed third-party for consular matters. As you have discovered, they will charge a fee for doing something you are perfectly capable of doing yourself.

What problem did you have? Ensure the photograph is in .jpg format and no bigger than 1MB. Did you contact the HelpDesk? In no particular order, change browsers, use a PC not a mobile device, do not connect over wi-fi.

I agree with lifesupport. There is no reason the Indian web site shouldn't work. I have done this a few times, and it is very efficient. But, yes you do need to meet all the photo requirements for size and format but this is reasonably easy to do with basic image software.

I looked up the Chicago consulate site : they refer to Cox & Kings for regular visas , and the the gov.in site from # 1 for e-visas. The evisas can be frustrating when filling out the online form , but its lightning fast once you have got all the formats etc right.

Thanks, I was able to upload the passport picture to the India website. I was initially having trouble reducing the file size but figured it out. Now just waiting for a response in the next day or so.

After spending 3 hours on the 1st of 3 e-visas for India, I made a walkthru including screenshots and fixes for common problems. Thought it would be good information for others.
