I read, on another India forum, that it is necessary to filter even the bottled water. can this be true?

No.

This is not true.

By filtering bottled water in India, you'd be taking paranoia to an extreme.

You don't have to boil bottled water but do buy reputable brands and check that the top is sealed. Crush the bottles before you throw them away so they can't be reused.

What are the reputable brands of water bottled in India ?

Also, if we choose to drink canned drinks, any brand should be okay or show be avoided ?

I went as far as drinking any water that was served on tables to locals in a jug, and never had a problem in three months in South India. Hygene has improved a lot but the old stories and perceptions still linger.....
