Hi everyone. Really appreciate any advise on the chances of getting a visa extension once you have arrived in India. Ending the gap year travels there but by the time I arrive there will only be three weeks remaining on the visa that was issued some months ago in London. Would really like to stay longer . Any views on whether this will be possible much appreciated. Regards JPR

Best way out is to go to Nepal (or Bangkok or Sri Lanka), apply for a new tourist visa there and come back to India. Within India it is near to impossible to get an extension. You'd have to go to the ministry of foreign affairs in Delhi, but they only give maximum fifteen extra days and only if you have a VERY good reason, and after A LOT of begging and pleading. Some years ago I needed 2 days extra because my visa expired two days before I had my flight home. The people at the ministry were very tough and rather threatened to have me sent to jail than to give me the 2 days.

Many thanks. Does anyone have any idea how long it is to process a visa if you apply in Bangkok. I am routing through there on route to the islands and then onwards to India. One option might to try and get a new one issued to replace the existing visa . Not sure whether Indian red tape would allow this though.
