I have an American friend coming to visit me in the UK before heading of to India, she would like a 180 day tourist visa which will start as soon as it is stamped into her passport so could do with getting it in the UK, is this possible? The only information I can find is for the 60 day e-visa.

Option 1: Is there a reason she cannot apply in the US? Ten years is the default - a year almost guaranteed. https://www.in.ckgs.us/visa/
Option 2: In the UK, she'll need to apply here: http://www.vfsglobal.com/India/UK/ Could be problematic.
Option 3: Spend a week in Nepal or Sri Lanka first, and apply for her Indian visa there.
Option 4: Combine the 60 day eTV with a side trip to Nepal / Sri Lanka.

Thank you for your reply, my friend has now decided to apply for the 10 year visa which as you say will mean there is no problem with start dates.
