I use MasterCard for the IRCTC.

I use visa which may be the difference. I know MasterCard has been viable option in India years before visa.

Thanks for all the replies. I have now got my tickets using 12go.asia and Cleartrip. Looking forward to our 4th visit to India, frustrations and beurocracy included!
