Heading on a 10 month round the world trip starting in India from the 20th April and one of my plans is to get a tattoo in each country as a reminder. I thought Id ask if anyone knows of any reputable tattoo parlours. I flyin to Dehli, going through jaipur, Agra, Varanassi and Mumbai.
Im also going to a few smaller places but thought id just mention the bigger spots as Im guessing this would be the most likely places to find a good place.
Cheers in advance
Pete

that sounds like a terrible idea in india, for three reasons.
the first one being sanitary conditions, both in a studio itself and also in terms of aftercare. guidebooks advise visitors to avoid open cuts -- which is basically what a tattoo is. i don't know that i'd get a tattoo in any country where hand sanitizer and wet wipes are at the top of most packing lists.
the second one being the fact that you have to REALLY be able to trust a tattoo artist. and while i don't want to make india sound like one big scam, if you can't trust your average taxi driver to get you from the airport to your hotel without trying to pull the wool over your eyes, why would you trust someone to poke PERMANENT ink into your skin with a needle? even in the US, where the tattoo industry is at its most professional, it's advisable to take a friend with you to your first sitting with a new artist, in a new studio, to make sure the artist is actually doing what they said they would if you can't see it for yourself.
thirdly, travel itself, especially in a hot, sunny climate like India, is not all that conducive to tattoo aftercare. you have to keep the tattoo covered at all times. your tattoo cannot be exposed to sun at all for several weeks. you have to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized. you have to take extra care of yourself, as your immune system will be compromised. some studios have restrictions on how soon you can expose the area to water. the idea of traveling through a hot country with germs your system isn't used to, having to wear mosquito repellant all the time, possibly exposing yourself to dirtier conditions than you're used to, being constantly on the move, etc. just doesn't sound like a great idea right after getting a tattoo.
all that said, if you really know what you're doing and really set on this, your best chance of finding a good artist would be in either delhi or mumbai. and the best way to find a reputable studio would be to ask people you already know within the tattoo community -- artists and studios you're already familiar with, people you know who've traveled a lot and are tattooed, etc. you also might be able to find websites via tattoo magazine listings, tattoo forums, and such. i wouldn't use a studio that didn't have a website, or at bare minimum an email address and the ability to email you the artist's portfolio and photos of their facilities beforehand. i wouldn't just show up at an address and decide to let them tattoo you.

There is a very good and VERY VERY clean Tattoo Parlour in Goa near 'Nine Bar' in Vagator.
If you go to Vagator you can find the parlour by asking for directions to 'the German guy who does piercing'.
His business partner is a great tatooist.
He did my tattoo three years ago and I have had not one problem with it EVER.
