Read a post from 6mths ago about successfully, getting a SIM on arrival at Delhi Airport. Was wondering if anyone has done it lately?

The free SIM card is available only to those travelling on the eTV.

I haven't travelled on the eTV, and I've always relied on free wifi and worn the global roaming charges when necessary.

I understand you have to search for the facility in the Delhi airport..

Guys, it is my first comment here and next February, will be my first time in India. I'll stay in Rishikesh for a month -- arriving from Brazil via Delhi --, so I'll need a SIM card. Like lifesupport show us above, maybe there is no free SIM card in Delhi anymore. So, I need directions about where I can shop one, when I land there. Can you help me?

@davidyoga

If you are travelling on the eTV you may well recieve your free SIM. If not ...

If you are going straight to Rishikesh from Delhi, then I would wait and arrange your SIM card in Rishikesh. The reason to do this, is that if there is any problem then you can just go back to the store down the street, rather than the store being 8 hours away. Plus, it may take a couple of days to be activated, so better to make arrangements in a place you will be for a few days. Of course, being India, the SIM might be active in 30 minutes. You cannot predict these things.

There are plenty of mobile phone stores in Rishikesh town. There may be some advantage in using a branded outlet (eg AirTel or Vodafone or one of the others). From memory there is a Vodafone outlet in Rishikesh.

Take extra passport photos, your passport, the details of where you are staying - complete the form, pay the price and you're done.

Thank you so much for your answer.
I'll follow your sugestion and wait to buy my card in Rishikesh.
Did you see that tere is an update on that text? Since middle of November, Indian Gov no more use Delhi Airport as base to free SIM cards anymore... sad, but true....
