Hello from a cold Germany,
We're planning on traveling around South India this summer and were planning on visiting Ooty and the like on our travels. We'd also like to visit Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and were wondering what is the easiest way to get there?
Would it be to go by bus from Mettupalayam to Sathyamangalam and from there get a bus to the reserve?
Any tips or advice would be welcome.
All the best,
Dave

Germany, South India this summer
Please specify the weeks/months of your travels. If you mean the European winter, that means monsoon in India.

The easiest way will be with a private car+driver.
Ooty and the like ... Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and ... bus from Mettupalayam to Sathyamangalam and from there get a bus to the reserve?
It will help if you can give us a complete picture of you planned itinerary. There may be better choices than Sathyamangalam; and it may better suit another leg of your travels.

Hi Lifesupport,
thanks for the reply and sorry for the northern hemisphere ignorance.
We were planning on traveling in July starting in Chennei then travelling down to Mamallapuram, Pondy, Trichy, Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, Ooty, Mysore and finish in Bengaluru.
We'll be using public transport all the way as we did in 2001, but this time we'll have the kids with us (12 and 14).
We'd love to visit Sathyamangalam Reserve as it's one of the few reserves in South India we can visit at this time with out being too heavily rained on and according to the website July is a good month to visit.
I have sent an e-mail directly to the Reserve, but they haven't replied yet.

Chennai has little visitor appeal, and you need not stay there any longer than necessary. Unless you have a fascination for hill trains, it is hard to recommend Ooty.

Rain is not such an issue because of the monsoon pattern in southern India. Ooty will be wet. But other places much less so, because they are more exposed to the northeast monsoon.
I think you may be better served by visiting https://www.lonelyplanet.com/india/karnataka/bandipur-national-park as a day trip from Mysore. Or alternatively https://www.lonelyplanet.com/india/karnataka/nagarhole-national-park
That said, Nagarhole may not run safaris during July. I'm less certain about Bandipur.

As always for India, websites differ.

"As the weather is subtropical, the best time to visit this place is from October to January."

"Best time to visit November-April".
https://www.str-tn.org/
"July to November is the best season to visit."

Hi....Sorry to chip in late....If you like to have a visit to the national park..I could advice you to consider Nagarhole National Park...Unlike other parks its less commercialized and the safaris tens to be more private....You could stay at the some of the small but good properties by the Tholpetty Wildlife sanctuary and cover the Nagarhole National park . The wildlife safari experience is a lot better in the state of Karnataka than in Tamilnadu or Kerala ( kind of sad cause Im from Kerala)
Koomonkolly Heritage Retreat is a good option to stay and they do arrange the safari tickets at Nagarhole

Thanks for the reply tourthewild,
We'll unfortunately be travelling during the monsoon and I believe Nagarhole is often closed for long periods at this time, that's why Sathyamangalam looked a better option.
We loved Kerala when we went there 18 years ago by the way.

Hi...
Safaris at Nagarhole are nowadays available during Monsonn months too....Untill and Unless torrential Rains on the day of the safari makes it impossible to take the Jeep inside ( Does not happen that often)....This is just clarifying on the point you raised....The forests of Sathymangalam are beautiful, just that the chances of a Cat sighting is a lot better here at Nagarhole
Enjoy your trip...
