Hai,
We go for three weeks to India in September. We'll start and finish in Delhi.

From earlier questions on the Thorn Tree I'm curious about the following regions: Rajasthan and the Delhi - Manali - Leh route. Delhi-Manali-Leh route seems to me very heavy but very beautiful and adventurous.
Is this route possible in 3 weeks without coming home totally exhausted? What would you recommend me between these suggestions in the month September?

Hope to hear from you and thanks!

Go north in September because it is cooler than elsewhere. And you will enjoy it and not regret it anyway. Rajasthan is usually recommended from November to February when its cooler.

If you go delhi manali leh, you will be flying in direction, is that right? Then book your flight as early as you can. You might find it a good idea to fly in to Leh, rest a few days to acclimatise then take it from there. Then you have the choice of spending most of your time in Ladakh and rushing back to delhi by road, or giving yourself a leisurely route back to delhi.

If flying from leh back to delhi, you need to allow yourself at least an extra day to avoid missing your international flight, and maybe even 2 days as flights are often cancelled.

Thanks a lot! Is the Delhi-Manali-Leh route easy to do with public transport?

We rented a private jeep-- it was very reasonable since there are 4 of us. You might want to look into this since then you can take your time. b

Because we already booked the ticket to Delhi and we are arriving in the night; I have an other question. Is it easy to book a flight from Delhi to Leh? What are the costs and do you have a recommendation for a airline? Or is it better that we book in advance?

I booked air in advance-- this route is busy in the summer because the road is open. You can book with Jet Airways, they have an American office you can call in the States and they are very professional. I booked 8 months in advance and was on a wait list for 3 weeks before any tickets became available. I have heard the national carrier is almost always full of soldiers, so there are rarely seats. Good luck! b

You HAVE to book in advance. Either of the main airlines are good. I travelled on both.

I think i booked about 2 months in advance. In fact, i didn't think the tickets were available before then. Best to figure this out by going online with the airline companies. Or as bclare suggests above, do it through an agent at home.
