What is the most efficient route plan to visit the following places in an 18-day itinerary in April?
Delhi
Jaisalmer
Jodhpur
Udaipur
Agra
Back to Delhi for return flight to UK
In particular I’m confused with the best way to get to Udaipur (if the tracks are a different gauge?). Would it best to go south via Ahmedabad.
Thinking of getting the 19/20 hr journey to jaisalmer out of the way early on (before we get travel weary).
Don’t want to spend more than £2,000 GBP for the 18-day trip for the 2 of us. I don’t like flying either, so I wouldn’t want to fly between places regardless of cost!
My girlfriend and I travelled independently around China last year (3 weeks) and found it surprisingly easy but this will be our 1st time in India, which I assume will be hotter and more difficult!
If anyone has any thoughts please let me know!

You can get an overnight train to Udaipur from either Delhi or Bharatpur (close to Agra), or in the other direction, an overnight train from Udaipur to Delhi.

deli -> agra -> jaipur -> udaipur -> jodhpur -> jaisalmer -> bikaner (include it) -> delhi
ahemdaad is not in rajasthan so you don't even need to go there. you could do this entire circuit in 3 weeks with about 500 USD (20-25 US/per day). use the local buses or night trains for travel. agra is a scam place so be a bit more cautious
nope going around india is not difficult...it will be hot in rajasthan from mid feb -> oct, wear a hat and drink water.

Can you check your book and clarify something for me? In the Udaipur section in Getting There and Away, it says the bus to Agra is 6 hours? It should be SIXTEEN. We based our whole route on this 'wow...isn't that incredible...must be a good highway or something' premise.

Just a note to let you know that traintravel in India isn't really much more difficult than in China, in fact achieving tickets is easier in India than in China. I prefer India to China and I'm going back to India in september (Rajasthan and/or part of Himachal Pradesh), so if you have got some good advice after returning from Rajasthan dont hestitate to put it on this forum.
