I have two days in Mysore in March. I plan a full day in Mysore itself and then on the second day hiring a car and driver (or taxi) to take the day to make the trip back to Bangalore, stopping off on the way or making small detours as necessary. I plan to stay at the airport that evening for an early morning flight out.

Does that make sense (I know it is a short period!)? Should I think of doing it another way? Does anyone know of companies or car and drivers who do this in Mysore, and approximate cost? Where should I aim to stop off on the way?

I know I could ask the hotel to fix it but have found in the past that the rates charged are considerably higher.

Also do you know the cost of a taxi from Bangalore airport to Mysore?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It sounds like you really only have one day.

Not really.

Maximise your time in Mysore - there is little of visitor interest in Bangalore.

There are better ways to get to the airport. Firstly there is an airport bus between Mysore and BLR.

Secondly, you could simply take the train to Bangalore

I plan to stay at the airport that evening for an early morning flight out.

You many not be able to do that. Indian airports have restrictions about how far in advance of your flight you can enter - typically 6 hours - although experience varies. A booking in one of the lounges or the day hotel will change this.

Hi Life Support ….and thanks for the quick reply.
First, I should have perhaps have been a bit clearer. I land on Day One from the UK early in the morning and will get the bus from Bangalore to Mysore that morning. I read elsewhere here that Flybus is good and goes regularly to Mysore. I'm not planning to hang around in Bangalore that day but I recognise I will probably be very tired (not getting any younger!) that day so at best will manage a wander around Mysore that evening. As you say I really have one full day in Mysore- Day Two.

On returning to Bangalore after Mysore on Day Three I will stay in an airport hotel for an early morning flight out - rather than hang around overnight for the 0600 flight. Sorry for the confusion.

But I had heard there were some interesting temples on the way (Srirangapatna?)between Bangalore and Mysore and thought that rather than the train or bus for the return journey I would try to take them in on Day Three whilst making my way back. Hence the idea of the car plus driver, or taxi.

I think it's a matter of priority and interest.

Srirangapatna is barely 20 kilometres out of Mysore, and is a feasible day excursion.

And you could "make a day" of the journey from Mysore to BLR. For example:
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/travel/things-to-do/embark-on-an-exciting-road-trip-from-bangalore-to-mysore/as54953984.cms
and
https://www.cntraveller.in/story/need-10-hours-drive-bangalore-mysore/

But I'd question how you are spending your time in Mysore.

Mysore Palace
Devaraja Market
Chamundi Hill
Elegant buildings if you like architecture
St Philomena’s Church
Silk factory
Sandalwood factory

There are some good walking tours in Mysore, and they can be tailored to your interests.

Another excursion, for a taste of Tibet, is Bylakuppe.

Pricing car transport in India isn't always straight-forward, but a figure between 2,000INR and 3,000INR shouldn't be far off the mark - in a small car, probably without air conditioning. A taxi / Uber / Ola will be cheaper than a "proper" car with driver.

I have to say tho', if it was me I'd still be inclined to maximise my daylight hours in Mysore, and take a train to my Bangalore hotel.
