Any pointers or ideas would be well appreciated ....

What would be a good place for a budget Hotel in Mumbai with points of interests close by
Mumbai has some of the most expensive real estate in the world, so "budget" is strictly relative. What is your budget?
Hotel Traveller's Inn 26, ADI Marzban Path, Behind Cafe Universal, Ballard Estate, Fort. Ph: (91-22) 2264-4685.
Sea Shore Hotel Kamal Mansion, Arthur Bunder Road, Colaba. Ph: (91-22) 2287-4237
Hotel Lawrence Third floor, ITTS House, 33 Sai Baba Marg (down a side road behind the Prince of Wales Museum, off K Dubash Marg), Fort. Ph: (91-22) 2284-3618.
and what would you recommend for taking the train down to Kerala
I don't understand the question. But given the train journey between Mumbai and Kochi takes a minimum of 24 hours, I recommend taking a plane.
Booking for November is opened now. You should book your tickets now if you can. In high-demand trains, overnight journeys and long-distance journeys, advance booking is a must thing here in India. Booking opens 120 day in advance. Book your seats in AC class, it is recommended class for foreigners. Normal sleeper (without AC) is not recommended for foreigners. You can travel in sleeper if on a budget travel or if the journey is small, 1 to 3 hours.
Please feel free to ask for any help, question or suggestion.

I don't think November is particularly hot, as always it's about availability - so for example - on 29 November there are just 2 berths in 2AC between Surat and Ernakulam on the 16311/Bikaner - Kochuveli Express. There are just 12 berths in 3AC between Panvel and Ernakulam on the 22150/Pune-Ernakulam SuperFast Express.
Sure, there will be waitlilsts and cancellations - yada yada - I'd still be taking a plane.
Thank you for responding ..I am in the backpacker category / a senior/ and love the adventure of the train ...I will look further to find a good place in Mumbai for 4 days before I head down south ...It must be possible to find something for $15/day...Back to the Lonely Planet Handbook thanks again...Rolef

Good Luck finding a place for $15.00 a night in Mumbai. Bently's Hotel 17, Oliver Road, Colaba, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400001, India was supposed to be the least expensive in Colaba. I dropped into a terrible hotel near Grant Road (it looked good on Expedia), and it was 2000 INR. A 12 hour overnighter might be fun, but 24? I've also done 48, but I was 21 at that time. I agree with LS, and it's only 1000 INR more to fly (3,673.00 INR on Spice Jet).
