We are planning on being in Manali early September and would like to do the Manali to Leh Road by jeep.
Can anyone advise us on the cost of hiring a jeep and driver for three days?
Can anyone reccommend a driver?
Is the HPTDC bus a good way to travel to Leh?
All information appreciated.

Dear Sarenity
In September the cost of a Jeep hired by you along with driver should be around Rs. 14,000 to Rs. 15,000.
However prices may vary a bit depending on the demand as September sees a lot of people returning to Manali after having spent the peak season of July & August in Leh so the price could be a bit less.

seriously consider the bus. Some of them have more leg room than a jeep, espicially if you are more than my 5 foot 8ins. Ok you do not have the I can stop when I fancy it factor but it is a lot cheaper.
The price you pay will be what you can haggle, look for the jeeps with the Leh plates at thetaxi stand

bus is a good idea. drivers are very skillfull. however, consider the possibiliy of getting stuck somewhere if there are rains and hence landslides at this time. also spend an extra day or two in keylong to acclimatize rather than shooting for manali to leh in 2 days. 4 foreigners in the bus suffered from altitude sickness as they didn't give it more time.
i made a reservation from manali to leh, but took a normal bus from manali to keylong. stayed there for 2 days and when the HPTDC bus came, went on that. we got stuck at saarchu because of landslides. thankfully it was a military base and they had oxygen for the people suffering from altitude sickness. carry food/water as you never know if where you can get stuck on this road.
i wouldn't go in a jeep. cramped for room, and the driver will try to minimize time to destination. unless you have 3-4 ppl are are willing to pay 12000-15,000 to get a private jeep. for 2 days.
happy travelling
