Hello fellow travelers: very happy since tomorrow we take off to New Delhi. Will be in Ladakh mid august and have around four days to travel within Nubra valley. I hope to make it without a tour package. I’ve heard that there is local transportation between towns within the valley: any advice on regularity? Initial idea is to sleep in Diskit and from there day trips to Turtuk and Panamik and/or whatever arises at the moment.

Are there alternatives to sleep without previous reservation in Diskit?

Thanks a lot. Safe travels to all of you.
Be well, be happy. :)

On the way out of Nubra Valley try to exit over the Wuri La (5,280 mts) that comes down to the TrakTok monastery and back to Indus river at Karu. It is a good alternative to double backing over the Khardung La. I think there is a bus going that way or shared cars from Diskit. (I hitchhiked) And if you are adventurous try walking down from the top of Wuri La on footpaths between the long zig zags; beats a cramped bus or car. It took me about five hours down to Trak Tok.

Diskit is a four yak town , you'll easily find the small square with the shared cabs. There are buses too , but infrequent. The old footpath between Hunder and Diskit is a nice day walk on the other side of the Shyok. No buses over the Wari La ( and yes , its the Wari La and Tak Tok.)

I have literally never prebooked rooms in Ladakh & Spiti , the only time this almost became a problem was when I came to Dalai Lamas teaching in Kaza many years back. Its more likely that a local comes up to you first and ask if you are looking for lodging.

thank you, sounds like a very interesting alternative to return to Leh. Will definitely check if there are shared cars or buses.

Thank you Vistet, we will definitely go by ourselves and manage whatever comes. Liked the idea of returning thru Wari La.

No buses , and since this is August : the Wari La do go out now and then when it rains , while the Khardung La stays open.

Thanks Vistet, am prepare to adapt to whatever is available. Once in Diskit I will check what is available and dcide which route to take. Can not delay my trip to Mc Leod Gj so I have to be sure returning to Leh (considering where we are).
