i am contemplating on going to the gir lion reserve in gujarat.
Is it worth it. what is the accommodation like. Is it expensive?
went to corbett park in uttaranchal. Beautiful place but a bit of a rip off. Didnt see any tigers!
Has anyone been to Gir recently who can give me some tips and info?
many thanks

I hope not since I'm flying there May 25. Tigers are more stealthy than lions, IMHO. My flatmate is a South African and we both watched a show on them and he instandtly said that they don't lokk like the ilons he knows. The program said that the lions have started to wander beyond the pack borders. The point being is that I hope the territory is small enough and the fact that they are open lands cats will make it easy to see them.
God luck, and if you go there before I do, please let me know.

See my reply to buck77 who posted on 23 March. There's a report in the papers this week that 6 lions have been killed by poachers in the last month - the poachers are reported to include some of the guides. We stayed in the tented camp in a mango orchard - very nice.

Hi Castor,
1) Yes. It's worth going for a visit.
2) The accomodation is limited (when I was there a couple of years back, there was the govt. lodge (expensive) and a couple of guest houses). The guest house I stayed at was very primitive and, they charged a fortune for the time of year (Xmas-eve). I paid rp400 to share a room that contained only 2 single beds.
3) The guest houses will give you the option of booking a tour through their establishment. The prices are fixed. Be aware that when you head out, it will be dark. If you have a camera, you may not get any decent photos for the 1st hour or so, due to poor lighting.
4) The park is closed from June to October.
5) Read the comments from other posters, that lions were killed - it's most likely irate farmers, who are having cattle killed by lions, so they go out for revenge.
Cheers
Zoltan
