Well, since you're going somewhere, it's probably best to get your money's worth.
My 1st trip out on my 10-year visa was 6 days in Kathmandu - Immigration guy smiled and welcomed me to India on my return. Since then I was subjected to the 2-month rule twice, but now I leave for 3 months at a time.
And FYI, I have many entries since Feb 2009, and no one has ever questioned anything upon entering.
One other FYI, not sure about Nepal, but entering India from Sri Lanka you'll need an onward ticket in order to board the plane.

a rehash...
sorry, i trust you pirate and enjoy all your posts for sure!
but here i am IN JHARKHAND where they are telling me i gotta get 'da heck out for 2 months....do you have any links or references so i can show them it ain't so!?!? thanks!!
incidentally, how long must you leave for to be legit?
The two month absence still applies to nationals of Afghanistan, China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan, Maldives, foreigners of Pakistani origin and stateless persons.

Who, exactly, are "they"?

I like the notion of 48 hours so there are very clearly different departure and arrival date stamps in your passport.
EDIT:
http://www.in.ckgs.us/general-information/faq.shtml See question 15 - it would help to know which country's passport you are travelling on.
