I'm starting this topic to gather any information on Kesariya.

The city is located north of Patna. It is supposed to be the site of the largest temple complex in the world. From what I can gather, the complex is in the early construction phases. You can find some information about it on google. There was some controversy because of its similarity to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cam.

Does anyone have any current, first-hand knowledge of the city? I would like to learn more about the progress of the construction, the availability of lodging, and any sites in a 50km radius worth visiting.

Thanks.

Proposed, rather than supposed. As I understand it the site for the proposed Viraat Ramayan Mandir is located at Janki Nagar, outside of Kesariya proper. Last I read (about a year ago) construction hadn't started because they didn't have the complete approvals.

At Kesariya itself there is a Buddhist stupa - noted at the world's highest - with Buddha statues in the niches of many of the terraces.

About 30 kms north is a place called Motihari - birthplace of George Orwell. Authorities were going to make a museum of his birthplace - I don't know if that proceeded. There is also a small Gandhi museum.

The town of Vaishali should just make your 50km radius. A small museum, a "relic stupa" and beyond that there is a pillar dated to Ashoka; another stupa, and ruins of a monastery. If you are travelling from Patna, you'll almost certainly go through it on the way.
