Hi, I am planning my next adventure, so now I have Kashmir as an idea. I have some questions regarding this....can you travel independently there...or do you need special permits, whatever....? I want to go to Wular Lake, and up to Tangdhar (Sadhna Pass...)...not much information to be found for this area, so any suggestions from people with experience there are highly appreciated. Any busses, taxis going up there or do you need a private driver?...I am Austrian citizen and travel mostly alone, thanks for your help.

You need a RAP to travel in that region. As a foreigner, and given the most recent violence in Srinagar, this is nearly impossible. In the past they permitted trips to Gampa Tangar with approved tour guides and police escorts.

Agree with # 1 : this is a very odd day , and year , to plan a Kashmir trip. Death toll from yesterday’s attack on Jammu-Srinagar road now over forty. Four civilians and seven troops wounded at Lal Chowk a few days earlier.
@ nowornever, with the escalation of recent attacks my only suggestion is to give Kashmir a miss at this point of time.
