Desertpearl, Check the above link for safety tips for women travelers in India. I feel certain you would benefit from buying a guidebook for your travels. Then you would have a good feel for what costs are for the level of comfort you would like. I am male and always travel solo. Bugs don't bother me, as long as they are not nibbling on me in bed. I much prefer fan cooling to AC. Earlier this year, I kept track of my daily costs, as there was a thread on TT about it at the time, and found that I averaged 1,100 rupees a day over a two-month period. Note that this was my average without scrimping. I did everything I wanted to do, traveled in 2A on long distance trains and happily paid entrance fees to whatever I wanted to see. During that time I traveled from Kolkata down to Vizag and back, with a stop in Bhubaneswar as well. In Kolkata, where I spent several weeks, there were days when my total cost was 650-700 rupees. My room in Kolkata, just off Sudder Street, was 350 rupees and it had a private bathroom. I kept that room (to good to give up) even when going out of town for a couple nights to places like Bishnupur, so there were days that I paid for two rooms. It really just depends on what you are comfortable with. Last year, in the hot summer I had a fan room in Varanasi for 200 rupees at the Golden Lodge, which was very clean and comfortable with private bathroom. They had private rooms for 150 rupees at the time, as well. Do buy a guidebook; you will be happy to have it.

Dug out an LP guidebook I used on a trip in the late 1990's. It's the November 1997 edition and lists the same Golden Lodge room in Varanasi at 75 rupees. Nearby Yogi lodge is in there as well. The exchange rate for the US dollar is listed at 35.70 rupees. Hallelujah...things ain't as bad as they seem...

India is still cheap. Yes, everything cost more in rupees but so has the value of € or $ gone up and up.

I am spending about 1500 Rp for good single rooms with shower and toilet. These are equivalent of basic hotel rooms in Oz.

In Mumbai and Kolkata I am paying way more than that

Food is still v cheap.

I book rooms and trains through Cleartrip and get whatever class I want by booking major trains 60 days in advance.

I would love to see a big Woollies supermarket in Mumbai right outside Dadar train station, having just spent ages pushing thru crowds to do my shopping.............

Some of us are talking about shared rooms. I try to find shared rooms for backpackers on a many cities (online) and cant find many options. On thailand was really easy to find a lot of hostels of shared rooms, easy to find new companions and of course, cheaper rooms.
It changes when you are there? Maybe they don't spend money on put those hostels on internet, and when you move around the city/town you can find easy some hostels with shared rooms.
35$/day its a lot of money at the end of the month of a travel around India, and you have too add the price of the trains/plane tickets. With 35$/day i travel around europe. I expect lower prices on India.

I have been India for many years, its better to arrive somewhere and look at the accommodation ur self. websites and photos are not always what they seem. Often paying more is less. !! I would not even consider paying 2000 rup per night. Its India.
On avergae 7 euro per night we have paid for 3 bed Villa, with a pool 15 euro in a complex.
600 rup per night is enough.
trains do have to be booked in advance but you can always use the local travel agents who charge 200 rup to organise for you or pay a local to get them for you. India can be expensive as europe if you get trapped in to the tourist route and prices. Haggle. India can be cheap for 3 months in india lived like a queen ate like one, all travel etc motorbike hire, pampering , tips, shopping cost 2000 euro. Budget 1000 per month and you will come home with change. I did not eat boiled rice and plain curry for this either. :)

Things are cheap but then thats what you would mostly get in return.

You need a clean toilte, dry bed and safe place. You will HAVE to check places out on your own or keep asking people on forums like these...
