Thanks guys, I'll go with Delhi.

To get my tourist visa, I copied a tourist itinerary from a travel brochure. I put the dates in the itinerary to match my airline tickets.

When i arrived in India, I went my own way.

@Gary D: I've applied online with Delhi as port of entry and exit but I don't have an inbound airline ticket as I still don't know exactly what I will be doing. Are they likely to turn me down for not having an inbound flight? I'm planning on going into the embassy next week to collect but don't really want to have to book a flight that I may not need. Am so sorry now that I decided to go to India. It was only meant as a stopoff on the way home from Nepal and now I'm so stressed about it I want to just cancel it and go somewhere else.

Some authorized agents say not to buy tickets before you have a visa, others require it to apply. Should be included in the instructions.

I did not show any tickets to obtain my Indian Tourist Visa.

I put the name of a travel agent at the top of my typed itinerary. The fellow at the visa office (VFS) asked me for the tickets. I explained to him that my travel agent would not give me the tickets until I had paid him. The VFS fellow issued me a visa and then I bought the tickets.

You have to ne strong willed to jump through the bureaucratic hoops to obtain an Indian Tourist Visa.

Couple of things ... if this whole Visa thing is throwing you off and stressing you, you might want to change your plans. Nothing about India is easy ... obtaining the visa is just a warm up to the the main event.

I have never, ever, had to show, or otherwise produce a ticket, for either a Visa, entry, or whatever in going to India (many times).

I got a new Visa last week ... no tickets were asked for. All they wanted was 'date of travel' filled out on the form. I made the date up ... hadn't booked a ticket yet.

Come on guys ! You know how it works,if you have it they don't ask for it,its only when you don't...

A little anecdote : I have a Research Visa (1 Kg of documents X10), I registered at the FRO for the first time fairly OK.
The second time after One Year when I wanted to extend my "R" Research Visa they said they could not see the word "Researcher" in my documents...
