Hi,
I'm hoping to travel to India in January but am having a few issues with my visa. I called the embassy in Dublin and couldn't speak to someone who could understand me. The visa application asks for a port of entry. I will be in Nepal first and haven't decided yet where I will enter India. I might go overland to one of many areas possible or I might get a flight to Delhi or even to somewhere south to get a bit of warmth after Nepal. I was going to play it by ear. So my problem is that I don't know what I should put on the visa application. If I put one port of entry do I have to stick to it or are they flexible? It also asks for an address. As I don't know yet where I am going then I also don't have an address. Getting a bit stressed as I leave for Nepal in three weeks and wondering if I should just change my flights and not go near India!!

The visa application asks for a port of entry.
I wrote "maybe Mumbai" one time. They made me stick to it, but I landed elsewhere ;)

I thought you didn't need a visa to get into Indian anymore if you were Irish??? Was that not a recent enough development?
Just write 'New Delhi' for your port ... they don't really care, nor do they for whatever hotel you are about to write down on the application. It's just Indian bureaucracy at it's finest.
That VOA dream will come true sooner than one thinks. You still need a pre obtained Visa as of now for Ireland, but India announced last month that Ireland will be on the list for their expansion of the VOA programe - another 40 countries. In due time.
The current VOA scheme costs USD 60 per Visa, and only valid for 30 days, non extendable, only 2 times a year, with a 2 month gap. So ... while helpful to some, it won't be to a lot on here I suspect.

Thanks all. I might just chance it with New Delhi I think and find a hotel from my guide book. There's a chance I might go across from Nepal to Darjeeling though. Do any of you know if that would make Darjeeling the port of entry then or is it somewhere else along that border?
Don't worry about this 'port of entry' ... There's nothing to chance.
Darjeeling is not a port of entry to India - unless your flying in direct from an international destination.
Once you have the Visa ... they are not going to say 'oh on the form you filled out you said you'd be coming through "x" port , but your at 'y' port ... go home'. They will let you in. It will most likely be a 6 month visa ... on my 5 year visa, with multi entry ... I did not have to list the Port of Entries for the 12 trips I made in 5 years on the Visa. They don't really care.

It's not in the least important what you are asked to put down as your port of entry or where you will stay during your stay in India. You can state anything you like and it won't make a difference. It has no relevance whatsoever to the issuing of the visa.

… unless an applicant includes somewhere which requires an additional permit!!!
can then expect delays.
