Has anyone had much experience with importing stuff into India? I want to bring in 2nd hand items for donation to others and am told that it is illegal to do so. The reason is apparently, to protect the Indian market. Apart from the obvious, is there any way round this regulation?

"Stuff" is too general a term. What are the things exactly do you plan to import? Thiswebsite lists all the policies & procedures.
Better yet to hire an agent to assist you in matters relating to export to India.
