Please pass on the information on those agencies near the Moreh-Tamu border.

Have you found any Myanmar government notice that the permits really are required? The cyclists of http://www.puncturesandpanniers.com/cycling-burma-what-you-need-to-know/ got the permit but were skeptical that it was really needed; they found the permit process very strange.

When are you thinking to go? I have a motorbike which I keep in Kolkata. I would LOVE to do this trip! I have read some people doing it, but I think maybe Indians. Will try and find the posts I already read about this. I don't think many people have actually done it though

The high will be officially opened in 2017. However, I met an Indian Army guy who works at the border between India and Myanmar told me if you're traveling with a valid visa, they let you cross the border. I haven't done the crossing personally so not sure if this really works.

Thanks! I've got the valid visa. But I wonder if a permit to cross from India to Myanmar is really needed or not?

Hi Andrew,
Please let us know which agency you choose and how it works out. When do you plan to cross that border? I will be traveling solo on a bicycle.

For info, when I was in Burma about 4 years ago I was constantly aware of what I called the walky talky (personal radio) guys. I assumed they were the not so secret police. They were in the airport when I was reassembling my bike, I saw them by the road in small towns and when I asked a local about accommodation he wouldn't answer but pointed at one of these guys.

My point is, IF you need a permit and IF these guys know you do, I doubt you will be able to avoid them. The fact the Indians let you through doesn't mean that you won't be checked out once you cross.

I take your point about seeing if you still need one Bill, but if you do then I reckon it would be hard to avoid the checks.

Of course Auung San Suu Kyi may win the election today and abolish all the controls!
