An incident took place in Delhi - a young girl was raped by a man posing as a plain clothes officer; he asked her to come to the police station when she and her male friend didn't have a driver's license to show. He sent the boy off to get his license and asked the girl to accompany him to the police station. Took her instead to an isolated area where the horrendous crime was committed. The law (which most are not aware of) clearly states that between 6 pm and 6 am, a woman has the right to REFUSE to go to the Police Station, even if an arrest warrant has been issued against her. It is a procedural issue that a woman can be arrested between 6 pm and 6 am, ONLY if she is arrested by a woman officer and taken to an ALL WOMEN police station. And if she is arrested by a male officer, it has to be proven that a woman officer was on duty at the time of arrest. Please fwd this to as many girls you know.. Also to boys.. coz this can help them protect their wives, sisters and mothers. It is good for us to know our rights. To what extent it comes of use remains to be seen in any situation. But as they say, knowledge is power. I did not know this and am sure some of us don't ? Please be informed..

What a disgusting thing to happen, we are all taught that the Police are there to help you etc , but for this to happen is disgusting to any Human.. Balthasar Great bit of Info regarding procedure of arrest for females, just hope that the scumbag gets caught and gets what is coming to him.. There is one thing for sure and that is... THAT HE IS NOT A MAN BY ANY MEANS.. I hope that he gets a long sentence in Tihar jail and gets raped many times him self......

Why is that the 'important bit'? A woman was raped, whether she was a foreigner or not, it's appalling.

but you cannot be arrested or even taken to the police station for not possessing the driver's license as long as no non traffic law has been broken.

All that unattributed article tells us is that rape happens & rapists can be be cunning. It's not news.

The remark Where's the important bit? Was she a foreigner? was totally uncalled for, and I concur with #3: an appalling reaction. If this is what you think, then your thoughts are worthless.
My post, it seemed to me, was relevant for anyone visiting India, or even better: living in India, for it has bearing to Indian legislature many are unaware of. Haven't you noticed how often female solo travellers post questions regarding safety in India? Well, seems to me my post was relevant to them.
Brushing it aside on the notion that since no foreigner was involved it is mere gossip, is repulsive.

but speaking from a local's perspective, here in india you cannot wave the law book defiantly or even assertively when accosted by the police, or other govt administrators.
in all probabality the bunty and babli must be desi couple (as in girlfriend boyfriend types) and just generally hanging out/making out somewhere.
Ofcourse there would be "parents" angle involved too.
So even though they are not doing anything wrong, the cop normally drums up something and threatens to call their parents.
This usually makes most people cave in. atleast the non married couples. This usually ends with some dough exchanging hands and everyone lives happily ever after.
However,
Balthasar, ofcourse it is nice to know about the law which even most indians must be unaware of, but with all due respect to you, something IS fishy about the story by itself.
Guy would just not leave the girl for something like a license. He would call someone (Especially these dilli walas) or make an offer.
