Has anyone stayed at Hotel Downtown (4583 Main Bazaar) in Pahaganj? Would you recommend it? I'm looking for something that's safe and clean.

hi S, i havent actually stayed there but have seen the rooms and can report that they are certainly clean and in good nick, the place seems to have been recently 'done up'. It is also opposite a very cool little nepalese cafe which serves great coffee!
Yes it's actually my first choice hotel in Pahalganj, very good value. But only for the rooms on the front side, much better than the 'interior' rooms on the back side.

You could also try the MetropolisTourist Home. See Lonely Planet webpage . Enjoyed our stay end of 2005.

I stayed there around 6 years back and had one of the rooms at the back - it was very grim. There was no cooling in the room and it was at the start of the summer.
But, the room was cheap - rp100 for the night - shared toilet/shower, which were located down the corridor.
There were staff sleeping in the corridors so I didn't have any issues with safety or cleanliness of the rooms or the hotel itself.
Cheers
Zoltan

metropolis is a very different situation i.e. far more expensive than downtown, probably around 1000rs a night. nice rooftop bar/restaurant however.
And as for zoltan's comments from 6 years ago, i would repeat that downtown has been renovated (god, im beginning to sound like i have a vested interest in the place!) and that 6 years is a long time in india!!

Forget Paharganj try the Tibetan camp in Majnu Ka Tilla it's cleaner there are a lot oj enexpeseve guest houses there. Take a prepaid taxi from the airport in the morning as most places are closed.
Try Dolma's house nuber 1 in new camp or Tara house Dolma's has the best food in New camp. momos, tukpa, tentuk, chowmein the list is endless.
