Cold isnt the real problem ( not in my bok at least , spent many winters in Ladakh). Snow thawing , refrozen at nights , layering and avalanches can be.

You need Inner Line Permits for the eastern part of the road , near the Shipki La. No idea on how enthusiatic the DM in Shimla or the office in Rekong Peo will be with kids involved.

Where do we apply for permits? Shimla or peo?

Start with Shimla . Office just below Scandal Point.

If permit is denied kalpa can be another option.
Does kalpa also require permit?

First checkpoint is in Spello or Puh , so no problem . Sarahan is another nice spot , also a detour from the NH22 , before Kalpa.

These are alternate for spiti, right?

All are on/close connected to the NH22/Hindustan-Tibet road from Shimla, following Sutlej river. Spiti route turns off NW before the Shipki La border pass. Overview map here

Talked to at least 5 taxi operators. They said they can take us but it is risky. Come next month. Oh well I'm here this month.
