@Hawaiiann

Is there only one class on this train ?

The #52455 Himalayan Queen: Kalka to Shimla has only one class "Chair Class". There appears also to be a 'First Class' however the train composition doesn't show this.

how best to book online.

There really is only one way to book online if you plan to DIY. You need to set up an account on the IRCTC.
https://www.irctc.co.in/nget/

Bookings open 30 days in advance.

EDIT: You can also book this service on 12GoAsia, which is less hassle that setting up your IRCTC account.

The available information online isn't clear.

The IRCTC ticket option lists 'First Class' and 'Chair Class', as does 12GoAsia. However the train composition information does not support this.

More importantly, IRCTC does not show availability for 'First Class' so I suspect there is only Chair Class.

Northern Railways (who run the service) regularly upgrade the coaches, late last year they introduced a 'vistadome' coach to one of the other services on this route.

In this instance it won't matter much which class you book; but I suspect there is only one.

Yes, unfortunately, and the seats are bl.... uncomfortable...

The Vistadome coaches ( glass roof ) made trial runs in December , with more comfy benches. Should be running now.
