Hello,

We are going to India for 3.5 weeks, 2 weeks today...yippee! There seems to be so much exciting stuff to do that we’re a bit overwhelmed.

We’re flying into Dehli and plan to spend a few days there before flying down to Kerala. We’re hoping to go to the backwaters (Kochi down to Kollam) and then hoping to go to the tea plantations around Munnar. Is there anywhere else that’s worth a look?

We then hoping to go to Chennai and fly over to the Andaman Islands for a week or so before turning home to

Any good tips for sights and travel for Dehli (2 days), Kerla (10 days) and the Andamans (a week)?

Thanks.

hey,you havent mentioned the two things that make india such an amazing place to travel in: travelling by train and the daily carnival that is indian spiritual life!!most temple complexes have restricted or no access for non hindu visitors in kerala.if you got the time maybe get over to Madurai to check out the awesome minakshi temple.the tamils do hinduism and temples like noone else!you might want to get there from chennai tho possibly quicker from munnar.i dont know if i can really suggest any particular train trip.i suggest it more for the experience...a tiny slice of real indian life for a few hours or a couple of days...magic!
have fun

Andamans are paradise but change your money before you leave Port Blair. No ATM's or money changers on the other islands so you need to bring cash rupees with you.

In Delhi, don't waste your time on museums. Mughal & pre-Mughal monuments are the way to go. (Wikitravel nails it all pretty accurately). Delhi's also absolutely super for souvenir-hunting. If you have the money & the inclination, do spare some time to visit "Dilli Haat". This place also offers a huge range of Indian fast food. Other recos for food (without which your Delhi experience is incomplete): Saravana Bhavan on Janpath (next door to MacDonald's), Chor Bizarre, inside Hotel Broadway on Asaf Ali Road (not far from Paharganj) & my perennial favourite - Andhra Pradesh Bhavan Canteen on Ashok Road.

On the A&N islands, I was moved by the sight of the Cellular Jail (it's of historical importance to Indians), but more than that, visting Ross & Viper Islands really shook me up. Loved Rangat, Diglipur, Katchal. Havelock was simply lovely, but Barren Island was the highlight of my trip. You need to book ahead for the ship which goes to Barren every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. It costs about Rs. 1000/- for a bunk. It's a 26-hour trip. I forgot to mention the usual suspects - Jolly Buoy & Red Skin which are great for day-trips. You get entry permits at the point where you catch the ferry. Pl. remember to carry water to drink (don't buy it at entry point, its quality is suspect & cost inflated).

For the Andamans Island:
remember there are a lot of israelian people that stay there for a month so the inexpensive huts are always quite full, and you don't have the chanche to choose from a lot of place to stay.
I was there 2 weeks ago and I must change 4 places in 8 nights of stay.....so my tip is: BOOK BEFORE. And the best place (economic and quite clean for the indian standard) is the Dolphin Resort.
You have to book from Port Blair (the LP guide offer the address) and the basic cottage are from 500 INR. It's on the nr. 5 beach on Havelock, and you can move from this beach with motorbike to other beaches and restaurants (the one they have is not nice).

Remember book before, because there are a lot of people and the huts cost a lot!!!
Emerald Gecko with bathroom are 1500 INR; Wild Orchid from 1800.....at the Dolphin with 500INR you can choose between concrete cottage or wood cottage and you have fan and hot water!!!! If you want you can spend also 1500 INR with AC.
PM me if you want to know something more about Havelock!
