Hello,

I was hoping someone would be able to tell me if, firstly, are there any Lockable storage lockers at CST, Mumbai that would hold a standard sized suitcase?

Secondly, we have booked train tickets online for travel a week today. We are on the waiting list - W/L16 and W/L17. Can anyone tell me if we are likely to get berths, or are we going to have to speak nicely to the conductor. Having been in India recently we know how complex the train booking system is on busy trains, but is being on the W/L better than having a sleeper ticket, and trying our luck that way?

Thanks in advance.........

The lockers at station are called Cloak Room, managed by railway. Reasonably safe but you must have your own lock, means lock your luggages and handover to them for safe keeping. A railway ticket is required. The rates are very cheap.
W/L16 should be alright but it again depends on train, class and season. Mumbai CST has a Cloak Room.

You must give class and train number to get even remotely helpful advice.

For example, WL16 will NEVER get you a berth in First Class air con, but will likely always get you a berth in Sleeper Class.

What a strange thing to say.

Sleeper class is a class of travel, a confirmed berth is Sleeper Class is always better than a waitlisted ticket on the day of departure.

Please give the full waitlist info, there will be 2 waitlist numbers for each of you, for example....

WL/16......WL/11

(in this case, the other one would be WL/17........WL/12)

The first number (16) is the position you joined the waitlist, the 2nd number is your position in the actual waitlist, this is different because there may have been cancellations even before you purchased your ticket.

There is a 10 digit 'PNR' number on your ticket (top left or right, can't remember), if you go to this webpage, you can check your current waitlist position.

thanks Steve,

our reservations, and fare paid are for 2AC on 0111 train - mumbai Goa on a friday night. do yoiu know if the W/L is for just that class or for whole train. From when we were last there I thought you reserved for a class rather than whole train.

we do have a PNR number, which am checking online each day. do you know if the online site will show if there are berths free we will be allocated them?

thanks

There is a separate waitlist for each class.

OK, do you feel lucky?

I'd be a bit concerned if I were holding your tickets, there are not too many 2-tier air con berths on a train, and you're travelling on a Friday night, so less chance of cancellations, there is still a chance you'll get confirmed, but it's risky, there has only been one cancellation so far, so even after another 15 cancellations, you will only be RAC (reserved against Cancellation), I think there are either 4 or 8 RAC positions in 2AC on train 0111, so add the 15 to the 4 (or 8), then consider it's a Friday night, and that there are not that many berths in 2AC, you can see why I'm concerned.

If you really want to be on that train, book 2 more tickets now (before cancelling your other 2).

Book today, book now.

When you book, use the Tatkal quota (look for the 'drop down' quota menu), Tatkal quota is a 'last minute' quota and bookings only start 5 days before departure (not including date of journey).

Availability for 9- 3-2007 in 2A = 0014

You will have to pay an additional Rs300 per person for using the Tatkal quota, and you will have to book for the entire train route from Mumbai CST (CSTM) to Madgaon (MAO), but you can still get off wherever you want.

Only when you have 'Confirmed' tickets, cancel the first tickets.

I guess the first tickets were I-tickets (Waitlist tickets not allowed via E-tickets), so you have to cancel them at a reservation office in India, the money is then returned to your account minus a small charge. (a much bigger charge (50% I think) if you leave it till the day of departure)

Try to get the Tatkal via E-tickets, it's a great feeling printing the tickets at home and having them in your hand.

Good luck.
