Hello,

I will be traveling from Mumbai to Aurangabad and arriving in Aurangabad at 6AM and I want to see the Ajanta Caves. I want to return to Mumbai immediately after seeing the Ajanta Caves. I need help with logistics.

How does one get to Ajanta Caves from Aurangabad?
Realistically, what transportation option is available to me to return to Mumbai after the Ajanta Caves? Train 17618 leaves at 14:35. Is it possible to make this train?

Thank you!

You can take a public bus leaving every 1/2 hour for 20-30 rupees, or take a taxi...

If you take a 7-8am bus which is easy, you'll easily be there by 9and have 3 hours... Return at 12..

Or taxi option.

Either way the return train is easy....

Yes, but the internet says that the distance between Aurangabad and Ajanta Caves is 1hr 49 mins. Is this true? According to you, the trip should be about an hour.

'woops....sorry...you are correct... was thinking Ellora, which i think are more impressive...

Assume you are flying into aurangabad... Take a taxi... if you are gone by 7, you're there by 9, have a few hours and return....

The logistics are not hard EXCEPT that Indian trains being on time can difficult...Chances are good that the train you want will leave a few minutes late

#3 is correct. If you have a 14:35 train to make, virtually the only way you could do it is with private taxi to/from Aurangabad. You'd need to start by 7am, because Ajanta is much further away than Ellora. Even so it would be rushed, and you wouldn't have time to walk into every single cave.

If you can rearrange and take an evening train to Mumbai, there is a travel agency at MTDC Holiday resort that sells cheap daily tours to Ajanta, where you'd be back to Aurangabad by 4-5 pm. MTDC Holiday resort is only a few hundred meters from the main train station in Aurangabad.

The Ajanta caves won't open before 09:00. To spend less than 4 hours exploring the caves is a complete diservice. And there is quite some distance between the entry point and the caves themselves. Also, you'll need a guide because you can't take your own torch (flashlight). Ajanta Caves are closed on Mondays.

No chance, if you're to see the caves in any reasonable way. Here's a clue - the bus tour from Aurangabad leaves at 07:30 and returns at 17:30.

Nope; longer, but not by much.

For paintings, Ajanta; for sculpture and carvings, Ellora (closed Tuesdays).

I was there a couple of weeks ago. By taxi it took 2h40m from Aurangabad to Ajantha. Part of the road is in a bad shape.

Moi aussi. I had a private car+ driver, I left Fardapur at 10:00am and was at my hotel in Auragabad by 12:00. The lesson is to allow more time for road travel in India than Dr Google ever suggests.
