If you're arriving in India soon, or in the next couple of weeks, you might want to (tho I rarely suggest this) bring some extra foreign cash to exchange.

For the last few days, ATMs in quite a lot of north India are running on empty - yesterday, it took me 5 ATMs to finally find a working one. And in today's paper, there are reports of empty ATMs at both Delhi & Mumbai airports.

Proceed with caution. And cross your fingers.

Ahem, this problem should be resolved in a couple of weeks. They're moving cash around and trying to print more.

Pirate, is this the start of Demonetization # 2

I read that this "temporary" cash crunch is being caused by an unexpected demand for cash for:
* Cropping season
* Marriage season - cash purchase of jewelry and cash dowry
* Coming elections

Perhaps the cash crunch is deliberate and planned to push India towards a digital economy where the transactions can be monitored and taxed.

But the good news is that thanks to November 8, 2016 Demonetization, citizens have good experience in searching for ATMs and standing in line ups for cash.

They're concerned about hoarding (off to dig up today's paper already filed away), dozens of raids in Bangalore yesterday, and probably other places.

They say there is Rs45,000 crore (crore = 10,000,000) MORE in circulation now than pre-demo, but people are taking out money more & faster these days, tho the average withdrawal nationwide is still only about Rs3,500.

They say it's the Rs2000 notes that are being hoarded, personally, I haven't gotten any Rs2000 notes from an ATM in months.

One problem for Indians heading on Char Dam Yatra (opened a day or so ago), no ATMs in Haridwar with cash.

This is a problem (or at least it was about a week ago) as far away from other locations as Maheshwar, MP. Luckily (I heard later that evening) they'd filled the one ATM I found with cash an hour or so before I tried. I'm needing more cash soon so hoping if machines are dry here in Sanchi when I try, that they'll be some somewhere in Bhopal! Thanks for the info Pirate, all makes sense now :)

You're welcome, and yes, MP was one of the places mentioned.

This time..... They're doing their best to fix the problem - we're all still stinging over Demonitisation, and a lot of farmers are affected with this problem.

Good luck with the rest of your trip.

(site died while I was editing, so here's some more)

But the Nashik printing facility, that was close to stopped, will be printing 20 million notes per day within a few days, mostly Rs500s.

Got no water, got no money. What's next?
