Hi all !
My ATM card has a 6 digits PIN code here in Canada.
I am told it will not work in India.
Does anyone know why ?
Thanks
OD

It may work, but there is no guarantee.
I've heard that the system in the sub-continent has a 4-digit system.
Therefore, if you punch in 4/6 numbers, your card will still register that it requires 2 more digits, but the ATM won't accept any more, meaning you are out of $$$.
Best idea is to change your PIN to have only 4 digits.

you can always change your pin to 4 digits (if possible) before setting out..but given that you've already discovered this might be a potential issue, i'd carry cash and TC and not rely solely on ATM. atleast $500 in cash, $1000 (or more) in TC and local currency and your card (if it works, excellent).

Before departing from Canada, change your PIN to 4 digits. All the ATMs I have used in India were programmed to accept 4-digit PINs. Also, as a backup, take along some TCs and some cash. Canadian $ fine, accepted almost everywhere; the alternative is US$ or Euro. Keep in mind, USD continues to fall in value against most Asian currencies, including IR, so you might consider taking cash in CAD or Euro.

I've used my six digit pin in dozens of machines in recent years.Touch wood, I've never had a problem.

If you do get stuck, you can always go into a bank or foreign exchange bureau and they will handle the transaction for you. You may be charged a fee or commission in addition to whatever your bank charges you for making a 'foreign transaction.' American Express offers a card which works like a travellers' cheque. You purchase the card, at whatever amount you wish and then use it like a debit card.
