i've just came back from india - march 07. following are my recommendations.
mcleod ganj. i stayed in hotel india house, which was my last choice, since i've booked late (october for march reservation!) for HH's teachings. to my utmost surprise, since my expectations were so low, the hotel was clean, always had hot water, the staff was very helpful. the best chef for india food in mcleod ganj, better than the chonor house restaurant & om.
my friends stayed in asian plaza hotel. they had to pay for heaters Rs. 150 (it was terribly cold), & were harrassed endlessly, like, will not be able to make an outgoing calls, will not be able to receive calls, etc.
delhi: yatri house & master paying guest (recommended by lonely planet). all true. great places, good people, highly responsible & helpful in travel arrangements & transportation.
jaipur: hotel arya niwas - ((recommended by lonely planet). fantastic place. helpful staff. good food. clean, neat rooms. good public areas. pleasant garden & terrace where you can meet travelers, including business people, from all over the world.
udaipur - hotel jaiwana haveli - ask for the rooms overlooking the lake. clean rooms, good food, nice roof overlooking the lake.

I highly recommend The Pink House in Mcleod Ganj on Jogiwara Road. Rooms range in price from 200 to 600 rupees with balconies with terrific views, cosy rooms with hot showers and TVs. Great value and spotlessly clean. Javid, the owner met us from the bus and guaranteed that he had the best rooms around and I agree.
