I've been travelling through Bangladesh for the last 2 weeks & I have a question about food in restaurants... I go into restaurants, look through the menu, pick something out then when I try to order, almost every time I'm told it's not available & all that is available is chicken & rice! Then when I try to order a tea, its always not available either... I mean Bangladesh is a home of tea! Can someone please help??? I'm really getting bored with chicken, rice & water!!!

thats very unusual, the only viable reason i can think off is it was holidays and ramadan, and they only served/catered to Iftar menu, and during the holidays they just dont bother with serving variety. r u in dhaka? cause i continue to eat out in dhaka and its fine, wont be able to comment on outside dhaka.

As for me I was satisfied with my orders and with my tea ! Maybe as nadith said, they still in Ramadan mood and still on holiday !

Thanks for the iftar menu info... I did arrive pre eid ul fitr... I wish LP had some info on eid & what travellers should to expect during this period... so far I've travelled thru Dhaka, Chittigong, Rangamati, Srimangal, Sylhet & now back in Dhaka for my 'rocket' trip... & with the exception of arriving in Dhaka this evening, in all the previous places I have had trouble with food & teas... I have found a few good places, ones not listed in the LP... but the experience of walking into a tea shop, full of people drinking tea & being told i would not be served is quite strange & no one I ask is able or willing to explain what is going on... I suspect, given the similar responses in different places that there is more going on... & I wish people could be more forthright & explain this not only to me, but to all people travelling thru Bangladesh... hopefully my question will be answered here!

I'll give you a heads-up on the rocket journey - DON'T eat the food provided by the staff on the rocket. You'll get charged an exhorbitant fee for all food and, you don't get the bill until you reach your destination. By then, it's too late.

As for other food, look at what other people are eating & ask for the same. I've never had problems getting dhal dishes at most restaurants that I've been to.

Cheers

Usally Bangladeshi are always taken fish or meat during lunch and dinner time. Vegeterian are very very rare in our country. That's why you didn't get good verities vegetable.

During lunch and dinner time restaurant authority close tea service for their guest as a business policy. Except this two times you can get this service.

Thanks for the heads-up Zoltan... have finished my rocket cruise now & am in Khulna... the journey was one of my highlights in Bangladesh. I took note of the food prices, 150tk for dinner, 100tk for lunch, 50+ for breakfast & 10tk for milk tea... I had one dinner & suffered no ill effects... all in all, I thought the food was ok, nothing special & really not anymore expensive than the other food I have eaten elsewhere... I did bring along my own snacks for the journey .

Thank you for your advice saiful, luckily I'm not a vegetarian, so I have no problem with the type of food here... it's just getting places to serve me what they have on their menu's... things have improved alot since the end of Eid & Durga Puja, so perhaps that was the reason for some of my food problems. It does not expain why I could not order tea in tea shops, in the many places I tried were in fact serving people tea at the time I ordered! And as for the 'business policy' of not serving tea during lunch or dinner? I have never heard of this policy in any other country I have travelled, & to suggest that not making a cup of tea or coffee for a tourist or anyone for that matter during lunch or dinner is 'good' policy is just absurd... I would be very appreciative if you could please explain how this is 'good' policy for a food & beverage service industry? And if it is policy, it should be highlighted in the Bangladeshi LP guide!!
