Hi there,
I am looking to travel overland from Kolkata to Bangladesh and was wondering if anybody knew how easy it would be to:
a) Hire a motorbike in Kolkata and then cross into Bangladesh returning in a week or so.
b) Hire a bicycle and cross into Bangladesh again returning in a week.

Where abouts did you cycle to and what were the roads like, you take back roads or main ones?
the roads are great
and motorbiking from Kolkata to Bangladesh isn't that difficult, provided if you have your own bike as rented bike can create a problem as far as the documents are concerned
and if you have your own bike, you can simply glide through the border with minimal checks and after you pay some entree fee....but be it a cycle or a motorbike, make sure you have you passport as you will need it for VOA
VOA?? visa on arrival? Thought you had to get that in advance?

and what about the 2 month rule that has appeared on the forum, 2 months upon leaving india before you can come back? it may be a problem

on a bicycle or motorbike. just one week in bangla. you wont cover much ground...especially on a bicycle.
the road to benapole is in poor condition.
and, as dlth says, the 2 month rule will prevent you from returning to india. so get a 2 month visa to bangla or make another plan. unless when you apply to the indian embassy for your visa you ask for the return permission after a week or so in bangladesh.
dont know a place to rent a motorbike in kolkata. you would have to spend time here to buy one.
your best bet is to bus it to dakha and rent a bicycle there and go around.
but then the 2 month rule...
