Hi Mahmud and everybody,

I'm sitting in my guest house in Bangkok looking for flights, and doing a bit of research about Bangladesh.
I've been planning to come for a few months, although I haven't booked anything concrete, as I wasn't sure of my exact dates.

There's a couple of things that I've read today that have given me major cold feet, and I would be interested in everybody's opinions.

  1. All the realistic (ie cheap and without 12 hour layovers) flights that I can find from bangkok arrive quite late at night. Is it safe to catch a taxi from the airport to my guest house at night?? I'm a 28 year old male from New Zealand, and ill be travelling on my own.

  2. I just read an news item about the resurfacing at Dhaka airport, and the queues and chaos that are expected. Has anybody been through in the last couple of days, and how bad is it? Does it affect the VOA system?

  3. I've also read that there was a Hartel yesterday, and that there are more protests planned across the country in December. Is it currently safe to travel, or not such a good idea?

I really want to come to Bangladesh, and I have been planning to come for a long time, but I'm a little bit worried that I might be putting myself in unnecessary danger. Any advice is much appreciated.

  1. Yes, it i safe to take taxi from airport to city. Please try to use either Hotels taxi or a taxi hiring from the airport counter.

  2. I heard that VOA queue is smaller than regular queue. I meet tourists almost every week and they told me from their experience.

  3. Hartal is a problem here. But as far as I know in Dec there is no Hartal declared. Also less chance to declare unless any issues arise.

You can check the TT board and on the net, Bangladesh is relatively safe country for travelers. Hope you also will say this after traveling this beautiful country.

The hartel was a pain.
It happened the day i was supposed to fly out but all i did was take a predawn taxi and wait longer at the airport. It is just one day.
I had absolutely no problems in Bangladesh over three weeks. Do visit, wonderful country.

Thanks for your replies. I booked my ticket today, and ill be arriving in Dhaka late next week.
I'm really looking forward to exploring beautiful Bangladesh!

I'm going to (hopefully - waiting to get my visa here in India) be arriving in Bangladesh from Kolkata on the 22nd and am also from NZ. You probably didn't travel half way around the world to spend time with other NZ folk, but if you're getting lonesome just let me know.
