Autotourism

It is reported that right-hand drive cars are not allowed into Uzbekistan. We drove through the border post between Beineu and Kungirot with no problems. While we couldn't find diesel between the border and Khiva, it is plentiful thereafter, especially at Lukoil stations. Lonely Planet is being a bit hard on the Shaherazade hotel in Khiva. We had a lovely time there and, while the breakfast may be "weird" as you say, it is delicious and beautifully served.

Hi all!

My sisters and I are considering a visit to the Wakhan from Dushanbe or Khoreg or really any city with a reasonable airport. We'd like to spend about a week there. We are German and American citizens and speak English and Kyrgyz. Does anyone have good pointers for us?

Many Thanks!

I've been looking at Sky hostel and Almaty backpackers. It's so hard to know as reviews on booking, tripadvisor etc are not always from travellers.

I thought I had it narrowed down to these two, but maybe there are more to add to my list? I will be there in July and travelling solo.

Thoughts?

Hi all,

I'm interested in doing this tour called Sary Jaz tour for 2 days starting from Karakol. The thing is, I'm a solo traveller and I wanted to share the cost of the car.

For 2 days 1 night, it's $265 and maximum of 3 passengers with a 4x4. I'm fine splitting the cost 50-50, but if I can find 2 other travellers then it would be even better. I'm planning to go on the 24th June. I have to decide as soon as possible as this trip requires a permit that needs to be applied within 10 - 15 days…

I'm in Kyrgyzstan in mid-August. I understand it's going to be pretty hot but I'm interested in hiking from Karakol to Altyn Arashan. From my research I've found it's a fairly popular hike but I've not really trekked solo before (always with a guide and never longer than 2 days, with accommodation in huts / base camps). Not much experience with field cooking, pitching tents etc.

Should I be trying to find a guide? Is it easy to arrange one in Karakol, or should I do it in advance? I've read…

Hi! I'm looking to join up with fellow travellers to reduce the cost of trips/tours outside Almaty (Charyn Canyon, Kolsai Lakes, Altyn Emel National park, Kaindy ). My dates are June 12-18. If you're around then, planning to see some of these, and want to lower your costs, please let me know.

Hello!

I'm going to visit Kyrgyzstan for 12 days at the end June / early July, and had a few questions:

1) Is it necessary to book travel & accommodation in advance?
I'm still finalising my route, but it's likely to be the one listed in the bradt guide (sorry Lp!)
Bishkek >Tamchy > Karakol > Kochkor > Naryn > Suusamayr with treks along the way.
I was hoping to stay in hostels / guesthouses / yurts and travel on buses where possible.

Do I need to get this all sorted before I leave?
I'm used to…

Just wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone out.

I was in Astana on a 30day visa-free entry. Unfortunately 5 days before I was due to leave, the white migration card somehow fell out of my passport during a trip to Shymkent.

This white migration card is extremely important, and I was told by several official sources that I wouldn't be allowed out of the country without it. I'm not entirely sure it has a useful purpose anymore, but Kazakh bureaucracy is slow to change.

My…

eVisa

Hello,
Hello,

by a stupid mistake of mine I entered a wrong entry date on the visa application form. In fact I will arrive in Dushanbe 1 day earlier than I stated.

Will they accept that at the border control or is it advisable to apply for a new visa and pay the fee twice?
Has anyone any experience on that?

Marburg

Thank you!
