My names Zoe, I am 20 years old and I am travelling to Tajikistan for a month to work in lab! Basically, I have a few questions that I hope some people will help me answer as I'm very familiar with the country.
I am going for a month and staying with a host family, I was wondering how much money do you think I should bring (I live in the UK so work in £), I should have some meals covered with the host family and I shall not be living lavishly.

How easy is it to change the British Pound in countries like Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kzakhstan.
Yes I do have bank cards and it will be my main sorce of money, but from the experience I know that it's handy to have some cash on oneself. And I do know that it's the US dollars which are the most acceptet curency all over the world. But at the moment I have some BP and I don't know if I have to change it to dollars or I can take the pounds no problem.

When I was in Nukus last year, some street vendors were selling some "little stones". I don't speak the language and they did not speak english but they indicated to me that you put those in your mouth? What are those?

I didn't see a thread on this so I thought I would start this up. Where are the best places to eat authentic Kyrgyz traditional food? Or if you can't think of any, are there some famous Kyrgyz traditional dishes that are only found there? I'm referring to Bishkek also.
One website mentioned trying the cafeterias of government ministries and universities. Any suggestions on this? I can speak a bit of Kyrgyz so English isn't mandatory.

Hi guys. What is the time difference between the UK and Kyrgyzstan? Lonely Planet says GMT plus 5, which makes it 4 hrs ahead of us now. But a google search I just did says 6hrs ahead of GMT. ?? Thanks
Hi, I will be in Kyrgyzstan for 8 days in late May early June. Advice needed! I've booked first night in Bishkek and then was planning to head to Karakol the next day. Firstly is it worth stopping off at a place like Cholpon-Ata for a night along the way or would it be ok just stopping off for a couple of hours on the way to Karakol?
