I will be travelling to Kazakhstan in late October/early November, entering the border through China, and would like to know about any of the following about Kazakhstan, if anyone is able to help that would be much appreciated.
1. What is it like travelling as a solo female in South Kazakhstan (Almaty and surrounds), mostly concerned with safety
2. Is it possible to obtain a visa to Kyrgyzstan from Almaty relatively hassle free and without LOI in Almaty
3. Are most attractions accessible by public…

Hi everybody,
where is Lake Song-Koel better approached from?
I heard that the better yurtstays are on the South side, so it would be better from Naryn, however according to lp's CentralAsia is easier and more predictible from Kochkor.
Where are the better yurtstays, how easy is transport from Naryn resp. Kochkor, how long does it take either way and what costs do I have to look into to get there and to stay there?
Are there any yurtstays that can be more recommended than others?
Thank you very much…
We are currently in Naryn and will be here until the 18th of Sept and we wondering if anyone had a Russia guidebook we could buy or trade. We will also be passing through Bishkek, Arsalanbob and Jalabad after the 18th. We have the central asia phrasebook and some novels to trade or we will buy it or make you dinner or something. My email is mangointhemist@yahoo.ca

I just completed a four day trek to the Holy Lakes organized by Community Based Tourism (CBT) Arslanbob. This note is intended to relay my experience, including some problems I encountered, for the benefit of other travellers planning similar treks. While CBT Arslanbob appears to be doing a thriving business and drawing increasing numbers of tourists to the region, rapid growth seems to be stretching the organization's resources and compromising the quality of its services.
I notified CBT…
what do you recommend me for explore the lake, know the nomad's life and spend one or two nights around the lake, Song Kul in Kyrgyzstan or Karakol Lake in Xinjiang? I will be there in middle october. The yurts will be in october in the lake? I think the transportation and the accomodation in Song Kul is more expensive than Karakol Lake, is it true?
thanks.
From where in Tashkent can one catch share taxis to Fergana/Andijon?
LP indicates the parking lot of the train station and Qoylok Bazaar ("about 10 minutes east of Tashkent on the Fergana Hwy").
However, I read on the thorntree a posting that share taxis to the Fergana Valley do not leave from the train station (unfortunately I cannot now find the specific posting). Do share taxis only depart from Qoylok Bazaar?
cheerio,
sean.
