Hi,

I am going to Uzbekistan in a few months and would like to pick up some ikat, suzani and maybe a rug. I am very interested in textiles, and it is one of my main motivations for going.

Does anyone have any particularly good recommendations of shops/stalls/places to get the above textiles? I was also wondering about prices, I generally like handmade high quality textiles, but don't have much money to splash around. I was wondering:

It is possible to get Afghan rugs easily?
How much do they cost? and how much do large blanket sized suzanis costs.
How much should I be looking to spend per meter for a 3-4 color ikat?
If Turkmen rugs are avaliable, how much are the large ones?

Do you see many kilims from Iran in Uzebekistan?

Many thanks for all your help :)

There is a carpet weaving workshop backed by UNESCO and Operation Merci in Khiva where you can buy carpets, suzani etc. I don't know how it compares on prices to shops/bazaars in other cities e.g. Bukhara but probably worth a visit if you're interested in textiles.

I was really looking forward to getting some silk from the highly recommended Yogdorlik Silk Factory in Margilan but though the tour was very interesting - showing the traditional ways of spinning and weaving silk, I thought that the silk on sale was both expensive and less attractive than that seen in Bukhara. This is obviously a matter of personal taste but I was sorry I hadn't bought some cushion covers, and susane in Bukhara.

Our driver took us to a small family silk factory - Turgunboy Mirzuamedov at 129 Orol Bayi Street (Tel 338157) where much more beautiful scarves were available at $8 each. They also had coats and some vintage clothing for sale.

At the Kuntepa Sunday Market - fascinating place, don't miss the plov - I found some traditional ikat material for 2500 sum per meter.

I'm going to visit Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva from 15th to 25th June. I want to see
Carpet Weavers
Designers
Natural Dyers
Wool Yarn spinners
Silk yarn spinners and
Suzanni embroiderers at work.

I'd rather avoid the the artificial government sponsored touristy places and see the artisans working in their real environment.

Your advice, suggestions, names, addresses, phone numbers to point me in the right direction would be most welcome. I'm quite ready to go into the outlying villages if that's where the best artisans are.

Thanks.
