Could someone tell me how hard it is to cash travellers cheques outside of Tashkent? This seems to be one of those countries where the advice is: Watch out for thieves, don't trust the hotel lock-boxes, and bring all cash...

I think its even very hard in Tashkent to cash traveller cheques!
But don't worry about safety; we are just back from 3 weeks in UZ and felt absolutely safe. So don't blame the country as long you had no other experience. Just be carefull, when travelling low budget and sleeping in dorms!

we cashed travellers cheques with no problems in Buhkara in March. We just walked to the bank where people were very keen to help us. You need your passport with you and it may take 30minutes, but it is perfectly possible.
