A note the National Hotel is a questionable choice if Gulnara's Guesthouse is full. It's probably an OK if comparably expensive choice if the Hadra is full, or you don't want to brave the (allegedly, because I haven't stayed there) dirty bathrooms. Can't comment on any other accommodation options in the Chorsu bazaar area.

A double room at the National Hotel costs USD $35, and includes a paltry breakfast - one boiled egg, a few bits of cheese, and a quarter of a lepyoshka (bread) wheel. Oh wait, you get chai too. The beds are satisfactory if you like your bed with a thin mattress, which to be honest I did actually find comfortable cos' I like 'em firm. The one bedroom I stayed in had quite gorgeous woodwork but I wouldn't pay $35 just to enjoy it. The toilet and shower are in good shape though.

The 'doctor' is a bit eccentric, which at best can be an endearing trait, except for his skewed take on hospitality. He's a man keen for the cash, but I'm sure still considers himself a good host as he'll readily plonk himself down on your bed and strum a few tunes on his dombra with a measure of questionable skill, but I'm no expert on dombra playing so bear that in mind. He'll also wax lyrical for a short while about things vaguely historical in nature. All this would be fine if he was an open, friendly, professional, welcoming fellow who made you feel at ease. Erm, option (c), none of the above. Sorry mate.

Last night I stayed at the Sam Buh hotel, which has raised its prices. It is now charging $40 for a single room.

The hotel looks nice enough, the room was basic, but seemed clean and had air conditioning and a refrigerator...I found it OK until I walked into the bathroom this morning without my glasses on...and stepped on a huge cockroach.

I confronted the front desk person, who was an idiot. He looked at me as if he could not comprehend why a roach in the bathroom would possibly bother me. He asked me if I wanted him to kill it, I said, "Yes!" he went into the bathroom and pushed the roach into the drain with his foot...(there is a little drain in the floor with a kind of little basket in it, to catch stuff from going down the drain, I guess) So the roach is still in there, and still feebly waving its legs.

I am supposed to talk to the manager at 9, but I have meager hopes of anything good happening.

Also, the Sam Buh is not on the street indicated on its website...no wonder people can't find it.
To get there, in case you want to, you make as if you're going to the Hotel Orzu, go down that road for about 100m farther and turn right where the pink building is. You'll see the sign on your right, but it's small.

Exactly -- why would a roach in the bathroom possibly bother you? A single roach isn't an issue even in the cleanest of hotels. A nest of them, however, is a different matter.
