Hello,

I'm planning my trip to Uzbekistan and I want to take a 2 days trip to visit some Kala's and to stay in Ayaz Kala Yurt Camp. I have red that are a few Kala's but it's quite difficult to know which Kala's are the most interesting Kala's to visit. Personally I think of Ayaz Kala (1 until 3), Toprak Kala and Chilpak. What about a camel ride ? Can someone give me some advise ?

Most of my trip I will organize myself but to visit Aral Lake and the Kala's I will book an organized trip. At this time I have some offers from Advantour and Arostr. What travel agency should I chose ? At this both agencies are providing my with good information so until now I have quite a positive impression of both.

Thanks !

Peter

IMHO all three of them are just three big boring piles of Karakalpak clay

:-)

Don't worry, take ... Arostr.

#1 is far away from right :-) Ayazkala is a pefect place to spend a night.
There's a local family running yurt camping. Very national food, very hospitable people.
Toprak Kala - nice place to visit for an hour, not more.
Chilpak - yes, visit it on the way for another hour.
Both agencies are very well. Arostr.

See Ayaz, Toprak and Kyzyl Qalas. 1 hour at each is enough and the whole trip can be arranged at any hotel in Khiva for $55-60 usd for a car and driver. The price is the same for 1 or 4 people. You won't be disappointed.
We organized a 2 day trip through Oktyabr Dospanov and it was great. It was really hot there last week, but shade can be found for the hottest part of the day, and it cools off at night. Reach him at oktyabrd@Gmail.com

You might want to ask to include the Zoroastrian Tower of Silence instead of another palace. This is a modified mountain top where the bodies of the dead were brought to be eaten by birds while being prayed over for a year by the Zoroastrian priests, so that the evil flesh would yield the holy bones that would then be returned to the family for burial in an ossuary (bone box).

Buy some extra apples in the bazaar to feed the random camel you will find wandering down the highway -- or for your camel at Ayaz Qala. (Tiny ugly green apples are fine for camels.)

CentralAsia_traveler: agree. Just - the Tower of Silence is Chilpak (or Chilpyk), as far as I know. Nearby of it ofter shows a local picturesque dutar performer/singer, who is happy to sing and perform for guests. What is very good about him - he will do it even free of charge, because he does it for own pleasure. But some hundreds / a thousand sum is a very appreciated gift.

Ah, you are right. I had forgotten the name. Thanks! How would a traveler find or contact this dutar performer?

CentralAsia_traveler: There's no way to get in touch with him beforehand. It seems that he's there for 6 days a week, from morning till evening. I have been there 7-10 times, and always saw him there, nearby to Chilpyk.
