I am a Canadian citizen hoping to visit Uzbekistan this year. Do I need a Letter of Invitation to get a visa? The Lonely Planet book says on page 138 it says Canadians are exempt. On page 225 it says we do need a Letter of Invitation..
"Uzbek visa rules depend entirely on the state of Uzbekistan's relation with your county's government. At the time of writing, citizens of the following countries were exempt from Letters of Invitation: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the U S".

Contact David at Stantours, very professional agent. They will only get a LOI for you, if you need one:

It's been a few years since I visited Uzbekistan, but when I did visit, the requirement of an LOI depended not only on your nationality, but also on which Uzbekistani embassy you used to get the visa. Some embassies were more friendly, and less likely to ask for an LOI. Other embassies were more strict, and more likely to ask for one, even if your nationality was meant to be exempt.
I think the only way to answer your question is to get in touch with the specific embassy you plan on using to get your visa, and ask them what their requirements are for Canadians.

My experience is, that it is impossible to contact any Uzbek consulate by phone or email. I tried Istanbul, Singapore and Tashkent, no response...

Based on the website of Uzbekistan embassy in Singapore :
There is a simplified visa procedure for the citizens of Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Spain Switzerland, the United Kingdom. Once you have the LOI, you can get a Visa-on-Arrival at the airport in Tashkent. VOA is only available at airports in UZ, not at land borders.
