Hi,

When does the "high season" in Uzbekistan start? We're going there the last week of July and the first week of August, and we don't want to pre-book any guesthouses/hotels (except in Tashkent at arrival).

Any suggestions about good quality/price B&B in Samarkand?

(At Tripadvisor.com the Jahongir guesthouse gets good reviews, but with only 6 reviews it's a too small sample to be sure about trustful sources. It's easy to invent reviews.)

One last question; Train tickets can be bought the very same day of travel?

Thanks!

Regards

As far as I'm aware the "high season" starts around mid-July.

As a place to stay in Samarkand I recommend the Emir Hotel. It's address is: 142, Ok Saroy Street,Samarkand.
It's a small private hotel, is situated in the ancient Makhalla, close to Gur Emir - the famous mausoleum of the Timurids. Nearby are the Rukhabad Mausoleum and Ak-Saray Palace and the other historical monuments. The hotel is very reasonably priced, clean and modern with excellent staff. You will be invited to eat with the family who run it. They invited me to eat with them in the evenings. The rooms are not large, but comfortable.

Yes train tickets can be bought on the same day as travel but I usually booked them at least 1 day in advance just to avoid disappointment.

Thanks for the advice!

I've just seen photos of the Emir Hotel and it seems to be very nice and the price is really great and it's in the very centre of town close to Gur Emir!

Do they speak English, Spanish or German?

We don't know which day exactly we'll arrive so what we'll do is to go there and cross the fingers that there will be availability or just phone them the day before.

Cheers

I know for sure that they speak English at the Emir Hotel but not sure about Spanish or German. In addition to English it's likely they would also speak Russian (if that's any help to you?) - Russian is the universal second language in Uzbekistan, but almost everyone working in the tourist/hotel industry knows at least some English.

Thanks!

English is ok for us, so that's more than enough.

Not sure about buying rail tickets on the day. However I bought mine in one go and in advance.
I bought Bukhara to Samarkand and S'Kand to Tashkent from a small travel agency in Bukhara. (It is just behind that small lake near the centre of the city).
There was little difference in the price and I had that cosy feeling of not having to fret on the day...

I bought my train ticket for Bukhara on the day.
An Uzbek friend told me high season starts in September.
