Tash Rabat - Naryn

Country forums / Central Asia / Kyrgyzstan

Does anybody know if it is possible/allowed to vistit Tash Rabat from Naryn (on individual base -without any guide)? Our aim is not to travel all the way toTorugart Pass border crosssing - but only vistit Tash Rabat from Naryn and back. Is it possible in a one day trip? Do we need any special permit or any special transport? Thanks.

Travelling yourself is permitted. However the roads aren't really road so a 4X4 is compulsory.

The roads aren't great, but the Chinese were busy upgrading when we were through there last summer. We went from Naryn with a driver, stayed 2 nights in a yurt near Tash Rabat, then back to Naryn after that. Tash Rabat itself was a bit of a disappointment to me, but the surroundings were magical. My 6 year old son and I climbed a peak just across from Tash Rabat for amazing views. A tough climb though - I thought we would be back by breakfast after a 6am start, but we didn't get back until lunchtime in perfect blue sky weather. Then hailstorms in the afternoon, but we all gathered around the stove in the yurt and were glad we were in Kyrgyzstan...

I do like the trip to Tash-Rabat from Narin.
The only crap is that you need to drive the same street twice if you can't do a round trip over the pass that leads to the north of Tash-Rabat leading you to Baetova (that street would require a 4x4). The street has quite some pot holes but I do prefer a non 4x4 as they have softer suspension :-) for such streets. There is a river crossing to reach in to the little valley where Tash-Rabat is, but don't tell the local drivers how to do such things with a normal car. They are the experts.
