special permit for Termez

Country forums / Central Asia / Uzbekistan

Dear all,

According to this site : http://eurasia.travel/uzbekistan/cities/termiz/
"There is some confusion over whether you need a permit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to visit Termez and Surkhandarya, it's worth checking with an agency"

Does any of you have recent informations about that ? What seems to be clear is that some sites require a special permit, issues by "UZBEKTOURISM" (exemple : Kara-Tepe). But according to this site : http://www.afs-research.com/index.php/en/analitika-2/k2-blog-2/item/247-uzbektourism-will-start-issue-electronic-documents-for-the-issuance-of-licenses
it is possible to get them online. Did any of you succeeeded in getting these permit throught this online process ?

Last but not least : any recent information about the Afghanistan border crossing at Termez ? According to this post https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/forums/asia-central-asia/topics/termez-to-mazar-border-crossing the border is open but it's 2.5 year old and does not tell how to get the visa (at the border ? In Tashkent ?).

Many thanks,

I've been to Termiz a few times, and know others who have been too. There is certainly no permit required to visit the city, or drive on the main road from Karshi to Termiz to Dushanbe.

Not sure about individual sites though. You could enquire in the Archaeological Museum in Termiz (worth a visit).

I crossed the border with Afghanistan in Nov and Dec 2009, it is still open as far as I know.

Afghanistan visas have become much harder to get, and the embassies are unpredictable. I certainly heard some reports of people in Tashkent being refused. Try to get your Afghan visa wherever you can, before arriving in Tashkent.

Many thanks for your answer,

For the Afghanistan I'll try to work on it before leaving (Paris).

No problem

Have a look at the visa pages and the forum in www.caravanistan.com too, it's a great resource.

Hi Gengis, you are right about the special permits are required to visit some parts of Termiz near the border of Afganistan. You'd better get a service from the local tour companies as they can include Termiz to your itinerary and get the permittion themselves for you. I may Suggest you Zukhro Travel - the local tour operator that can be helpful for you.
