Russia to Kazakhstan by Road

Hi

Has anyone crossid from Russia into Kazakhstan from Rubtsovsk to Semey? What were the formalities like? Is there anywhere cheap to stay in Rubtsovsk (or closer to the border) in case of being stranded?
