Limits Of VISA-ATMs

Country forums / Central Asia / Tajikistan

Which limits have ATMs for drawings in Kyrgyzstan? Are several drawings possible on the same day at the same or a different bank?
Thanks

A few things to know about ATM's in Kyrgystan:

  1. Few ATM's take cards from other countries (KAZ Com is your best best, with branches and atm machines all over).
  2. Of the banks that take cards from other counties, most take only VISA, not Mastercard (for example, a couple at the guesthouse spent all Saturday morning looking for an ATM that would take their Belgian Mastercard.)
  3. There is an 8,000 som limit per ATM transaction.
  4. You can do two transactions per card per day (so a total of 16,000 som per card per day). Be sure to let your bank know you'll be doing this. Some travellers have had cards canceled or put on hold becuase the bank thinks multiple use means a stolen card). Many travelers go to the ATM with two cards, and use each one twice.
  5. Sometimes ATM's run out of large notes or, out of money altogether. For example, yesterday, I went to the ATM intending to do two 8,000 som transactions with my card. But the machine said that the largest bill it had was a 100 som bill, (this equals about $1USD) and that the maximum withdrawl was 3,000 som in 100 som notes.

Gotta love the adventure of it!

Thank you very much clairbutler, this is all I wanted to know and even more, extremely helpful. Unfortunately I made a mistake, I need to know this for for Tadjikistan too, but confused the country here. So are you informed about Taj. too?

FYI the ATM at the post office in Bishkek had an option for dispensing US dollars as well as SOM. And the limit on it was 10,000 som. I've had better luck in the morning with taking out cash, working under the assumption that the machines get bills in the morning :).

Another thanks for this! This was a timely post. The money situation in KG is proving more vexing than I had anticipated, due to the daily maximums. The place I went last night had a max of 4000 som -- and I don't like doing multiple transactions, bc my own bank charges $5 per foreign transaction. But I found a Kazcommert bank this morning and my money situation is much improved!
